Crafting Horoscopes: July 2020

Hello Crafters! I haven’t done these for a while and it’s weirdly fitting that I’m writing these in a time when nothing is predictable. It is also the first month of my 30s, which still feels strange to say. It’s probably for the best that I haven’t done one of these in such a long time. There is no way I would have been able to give anyone an accurate horoscope for the beginning of 2020. But I was talking to my best friends the other day and out of all the many posts I’ve made, the horoscopes were the ones we talked about. And it made me realize something. I love doing these. They are so much fun to write and in through here I just want to do what I can to spread some happiness to all of you.

Also, I left my 20s behind on July 2nd. So July is my Birthday month! This crab is inching her way closer to the other side of the hill. I’ve often joked that the older I get the less ironic my elderly millennial tag line will become. There will come a day when I will shout to a group of young whippersnappers \”I am an elderly millennial, get off my lawn\” and they will simply reply \”Yes, we know\”.

I like to give an example of my insanity and drama at the beginning of every post so that as a reader you know what they are getting into right from the start.

All of this is to say that I’m super excited to write these for my birthday month of July and I hope that you all are staying safe. Lastly, I do want to preface this by saying that this is all meant in good fun and to bring a smile to your face. Please do not change your whole life based on my horoscopes! With that said let’s get into your crafting horoscopes for July!

June 21-July 22

First of all, Happy Birthday little crabs! On a personal note, I hope we all have a great year ahead of us!

You’ve been working on a great project but you might be feeling more than a little conflicted in through here. You’re currently at a crossroads with your current Work In Progress and you can’t decide which direction to take the project. Just know that it is all a part of your process with this project. For the next few days, you are going to want to take a step back and clear your head. When you come back around to this project you will come back with a new perspective. And this impossible decision will seem clearer than ever before. You will realize that this \”problem\” isn’t a problem at all. It’s an opportunity for growth and will push your skills to another level.

Creative Challenge: You are going to have to strike a difficult balance this month between remaining open and willing to listen to suggestions from other creatives while also experimenting with techniques and trusting in your ideas. Hear the advice that is being given to you. But don’t let that overpower your ideas and things you are excited to try out. It’s a bit of a tight rope. But as long as you don’t let yourself fall too far in either direction you will be just fine.

Creative Suggestion: Quick and mindless projects to take your mind off of the bigger project looming in the back of your mind. What was your go-to craft when you first started making? Do that and allow your worries to drift away

July 23-August 22

Wow! Well, that’s a pretty big plan you have rolling around in the back of your brain. Calling them \”Ideas of grandeur\” doesn’t seem to cover it. You are thinking of something big… now it’s time to take the first step. Coming up with an idea is only step one. Putting that idea into action and better yet, surrounding yourself with the right community to help you are steps 2-100. You are an extremely creative person. You just have to move to the action steps to turn your plan into a reality.

Creative Challenge: You might come across as someone who has it all figured out. This month you are going to have to work on peeling back some of the superficial layers that you use as protective armor. Only by opening your self up will you get the feedback that is going to propel your idea to the next level.

Creative Suggestion: Find your community. And if it doesn’t exist build it yourself. You need to surround yourself with creatives you can trust and then trust their feedback and advice. Zoom party anyone?

August 23-September 22

You have been deeply emotionally affected by everything that’s going on in the world and you are tired of feeling helpless. Your capacity to give back is at an all-time high this month. You might not be able to do every project that you have on your list. But you can do one or two projects REALLY well! If you focus your energy into a few smaller charity projects vs the overwhelming list you have (in what is probably a very organized notebook) then you might be able to start crossing things off. You are heading in the right direction you just need to take some of the pressure off of yourself to save the entire world with a single stitch.

Creative Challenge: The projects you’re working on might seem like they have a high level of waste, which might be driving you crazy. There is a fine line between hoarding and saving though. So be critical about which scraps can be reused in a new way and which scraps are better thrown away. Don’t worry, you will balance out your carbon footprint in the next few months.

Creative Suggestion: Charity projects. Virgos, this month is all about giving back. It could be as simple as a yarn bomb to spread joy to your neighbors or as big as organizing a virtual community crafting project. You have to do your research on which organization is the right fit for you. But once you find it you will start to feel so much better in all of the other areas of your life too.

September 23-October 22

You are going to be full of creative energy this month which is amazing because you have a long list of things you are trying to work on and get off your needles, hooks, looms, hoops, and in some cases all of the above. Your creative energy is almost like a cup overflowing this month and because of that, you are going to feel drawn to help other creatives by giving out advice… whether they’ve asked for it or not.

Creative Challenge: Wanting to help other creatives achieve their goals is wonderful and could be a super helpful way to express your creativity. Especially since you only have two hands. Just make sure that they are asking for your help. Try to stay present and if the person you are trying to \”help\” starts to pull away. Don’t get offended. You might be right but it’s not worth losing a friend over.

Creative Suggestion: Focus on the fundamentals this month. You might want to pick up 1,000 new projects but this is the perfect time for you to learn 1,000 new stitches instead of full WIPS. A great idea could be to work your way through a stitch dictionary. Each day tackle a new swatch or stitch. By doing a set of tiny projects you will end this month feeling a lot more productive rather than being surrounded by the projects you’ve yet to cross off your list.

October 23-November 21

Making mistakes isn’t always a bad thing. Mistakes make us who we are. I never would have learned how to double crochet if I hadn’t done a single crochet wrong a few hundred times first. Keep the lessons you’ve learned while working on this new WIP in your back pocket at all times. If at the beginning of the month you feel yourself getting frustrated take a pause and focus on what you can take away from this \”setback\”. These lessons you are learning are going to help you in a big way later on down the line.

Creative Challenge: Charge ahead with this project and don’t let a few minor hiccups knock you over. When you complete this project you will be blown away by the results. Every stitch has been worth it in the end. To be honest, you would have been bored if it had gone any other way.

Creative Suggestion: You already have everything you need to push through this WIP. Don’t waste your money on unnecessary tools or items to make the process go faster. Speed is not the most important factor with this one. All you need is a bar of your favorite chocolate, a few deep breaths, and a reminder that you love what you’re making!

November 22-December 21

Money might be a little tight this month Sagittarius. You can lean on your craft to help you through this stressful period without spending more money. You just might need to get a little creative. If you run out of yarn mid-project don’t stress. You can use a different ball from your stash to finish it off. Or put that project aside and work on something else that you do have access to. Let your crafting be your safe spot this month. Don’t let it become another area to stress over. You have enough going on without that added pressure you are putting on yourself.

Creative Challenge: When you start to feel overwhelmed by the outside world fall back on your craft and take a break with something that brings you joy. You are working so hard and are doing an amazing job of keeping it all together (even if it doesn’t always feel that way). Know that you aren’t making it up. You have a lot on your plate. Keep going and continue to push yourself but also know that you deserve some \”you time\” here and there.

Creative Suggestion: You are going to be working hard in other areas of your life this month. So choose a no-stress project to get you through this month. Taking time for yourself is the only way you will be successful in other areas of your life. Otherwise, you are going to burn out… and yes, I know that’s easier said than done.

December 22-January 19

Capricorn, this is no time for regrets! I hate to say this because it’s such a cliche but there’s no time like the present. You have been blocking yourself from moving forward on projects because you are focusing on the wrong things. There’s a long list of reasons why not to start this project but have you paused to think of all the reasons why you should? You can do this! It’s time to go for it! Think about it, if the negative voices that are running through your brain saying \”You’re not skilled enough to try that\” are correct, then what’s the worst thing that’s going to happen? You’re going to have to rip out a few rows? When you think about it that’s not so scary. No one who tried that project/skill was an expert the first time. But you’re a lot better than you think you are.

Creative Challenge: Give yourself the freedom to mess up and know that you are capable of completing the task at hand. You just have to try. There is learning that comes from mistakes. Every stitch, brushstroke, and row counts towards the finished project and that includes the ones that will be taken out and erased from the final version.

Creative Suggestion: Tackle THAT project. The one you’ve been thinking about in the back of your brain the whole time you’ve been reading this. Go big. Be bold in your choices. If you don’t like it then start again knowing that every time you restart you are one step closer not one step back.

January 20-February 18

How are you doing Aquarius? I know you’re feeling a little alone right now and it’s safe to say that it’s starting to get to you more than some of the other signs. You are in a period of isolation not only because of what is going on externally in the world but also because of what is going on internally. Deep breath. Keeping busy with your craft is going to help you through this. But I’m not talking about mindless busywork. I’m talking about taking this time to expand your horizons and learn something new. That could be as simple as a new stitch or it could be an entirely new skill altogether. You need to work on keeping your mind engaged.

Creative Challenge: One of the challenges you are facing in through here is the temptation to become a little… lazy. You might be caught in a sluggish cycle right now where every day is bleeding into the one before it and the one after it. You are going to have to actively work to find more balance in your life.

Creative Suggestion: Take at least one day a week and put on something special that you’ve made or that has been made for you. Try to do this even if it’s a day when you aren’t going to see another person. It’s not for them, it’s for you.

February 19-March 20

For you, this month is all about New New New! You are ready to start something new this month even if it might not feel like it right away since you might be feeling a little out of practice. That’s completely normal. You needed a little break and now you are ready to tackle your next project head-on. But it might have a different twist to it then you are currently imagining. But trust me, that makes it so much better in the long run!

Creative Challenge: In a moment when staying in your creative bubble feels like the most comfortable option, you are going to have to break out of that bubble and lean on your community. Which might be a tougher task than it sounds. But for the project you are working on getting creative feedback at the beginning of the project will save you so many headaches later on. This could be as simple as opening up through social media posts or interacting with a Facebook group that you’ve been a quiet participant of. Reach out and let other creatives support your ideas. You don’t have to take their advice but it’s helpful to hear constructive criticism.

Creative Suggestion: Start keeping a journal if you don’t already do so. You are going to need a place to keep track of all the brilliant ideas you have. Then don’t let them just be ideas. Take action. You are a force of creativity! It’s time to show the world what’s in your brain.

March 21-April 19

Wow, you’ve been busy since I last wrote these. And you haven’t just been busy with WIPs. You’ve been busy with internal work and you’ve changed a lot over these last few months, even if you can’t see that about yourself. It shouldn’t surprise me that an Aries has stayed extremely busy during the quarantine. Talk about staying true to your sign. But now that you’ve worked on building up your list of skills the question becomes what are you going to create with all of that knowledge? Start asking yourself if there is a way for you to use a little of everything you’ve learned in one project? Ok, maybe not \”everything\” and maybe not \”one\”. But you should start thinking about how different techniques can work together going forward.

Creative Challenge: You have SO MUCH to choose from. There isn’t a tool belt big enough for you to fit every skill you’ve learned. But that’s a super fun challenge to have. Are you going to combine embroidery with weaving? Knitting with felting? Start playing around and don’t be afraid to break the rules!

Creative Suggestion: Write down every skill you have onto tiny pieces of paper. Put them all into a bowl and then pull out two or three at a time. Then brainstorm ways that you can use all three skills in the same project. Do this a few times and after you feel satisfied with your list take a break and then do it a few more times. When you are done start working on the idea you are the most excited about! The sky is the limit for what you can create. I have a feeling that the person who thought of the One-Eyed One-Horned Flying Purple People Eater did something similar and it worked out so well for them!

April 20-May 20

You are at a crossroads with your personal and creative lives Taurus. That’s only getting tougher because you are getting a little too comfortable with the indecision. The danger is that you are starting to believe that not making a decision is easier than moving forward and choosing the wrong path. But the obstacle you are facing this month is your eventual boredom with this stagnation. At least making a move forward is movement. By not working on your projects you are getting stuck in one place. This might have been comforting at one point but it’s not working for you anymore.

Creative Challenge: Work through the pile of projects that have been placed in WIP \”time out\” over the last few months. Start with the project that has been causing the most anxiety for you. When you pick it up again you might not feel as anxious about it as you once did.

Creative Suggestion: You have to know that you are not the same crafter you were when you put down that project. You’ve grown a lot since then and are capable of completing so much more than you were back then. Circle back. Things might look a little different now.

May 21-June 20

You’re doing too much Gemini! It’s exciting… but it’s too much. The issue is that you are trying to work too many ideas into one project. Take a step back and critically evaluate what’s working and what’s not working. Be a little more cautious than you would typically be. More isn’t always more. In this case, if you take off even just the last element you have a completely different WIP on your hands and it’s incredible!

Creative Challenge: You don’t have to spend a lot of money to create your dream project. There is no reason to spend money on crafting items you don’t even really want. Challenge yourself to get creative without breaking the bank. You already have everything you need and more.

Creative Suggestion: Have you ever unraveled an old sweater and then re-knit it into something brand new? Try making something using what you already have access to. You might be surprised by what you can create using the things you’ve taken for granted. Think outside of the box!

Happy Crafting!
